LAST JEWS OF LIBYA, THE: SJFF 2008
13TH ANNUAL SEATTLE JEWISH FILM FESTIVAL 2008
THE LAST JEWS OF LIBYA Cinerama: Sunday, April 13th, 12:45 PM (U.S.A., 2007, 50 min,Arabic/English/Hebrew/Italian) Director: Vivienne Roumani-Denn Topics: Sephardic Jewish History, Family, Personal Story, Anti-Semitism
Through personal photographs and memories, filmmaker Vivienne Roumani-Denn chronicles her family's touching and harrowing story and the plight of Libya's once-thriving Jewish community. Beautifully narrated by Isabella Rossellini, the documentary sheds light on the thriving Jewish community that once existed in Libya, tracing its origins back to the 3rd century B.C. It was not until the dawn of the Second World War that the Jews of Libya faced their greatest troubles. The arrival of the Italians eventually ushered in fascism, an assault on the community that left a lasting mark, followed by British rule under which the Jews suffered pogroms. Roumani-Denn raises some very important questions about identity, community, family and finding a home in the world.
