REFUSENIK: SJFF 2008
13TH ANNUAL SEATTLE JEWISH FILM FESTIVAL 2008
REFUSENIK MOHAI, Wednesday, April 9th, 6:00 PM (U.S.A., 2007, 112 min, English/Russian/Hebrew) Director Laura Bialis will attend the SJFF screening and post-film reception. Topics:* Anti-Semitism, Soviet Jews, Civil & Human Rights, Cold War, Israel, American History
Refusenik is the first retrospective documentary to chronicle the 30-year movement to free Soviet Jews. It shows how a small grassroots effort, bold enough to take on a Cold War superpower, blossomed into an international human-rights campaign. Told through the eyes of activists on both sides of the Iron Curtain - many of whom survived punishment in Soviet Gulag labor camps - the film weaves first-person accounts of heroism, sacrifice and ultimately liberation. Many of the photographs and covert film footage - some smuggled out of the Soviet Union - have never been seen before by audiences.
