Keen Dance Theater
John Keen envisioned and created Keen Dance Theater, also known as KDT, in September of 2008. John believed that there weren't enough stories being told by African American choreographers through dance, and wanted an outlet to perform works that challenge stereotypes and break social barriers. KDT is a Modern/Contemporary company, based in New York City, that is more than just movement; It's sto
rytelling.
John seeks dancers that have an innate ability to communicate and that tap into the emotional DNA of each piece. John believes in using the natural reactions of dancers as inspiration for his vision and choreography. Sean Miller, the company's dramaturge, works individually with each dancer to guarantee an organic and visceral feel based in reality. The infusion of all these elements: music, choreography, emotion, and dramais what fulfills John's artistic vision. One great example of this is the company's featured work "Suite Nina," a ballet loosely based on Porgy and Bess.
