The Bay Area ensemble GAMELAN SEKAR JAYA (GSJ) acclaimed internationally for its innovative work with the music and dance of Bali returns to LA PEÑA after 20 years. The group will present an exciting hands-on gamelan and dance workshop, followed by an evening performance showcasing the intricate melodies and passionate drama of Balinese gamelan and dance.
This unique event will begin with a free public workshop in Balinese Dance and Balinese Gamelan- Bali's traditional bronze and bamboo percussion orchestra. Master artist-in-residence I MADE SUBANDI (Guest Music Director) and NI LUH ANDARAWATI (Guest Dance Teacher) will lead the session along with Sekar Jaya's company artists, utilizing traditional hands-on teaching methods in an interactive introduction to the performing arts of Bali. (Please note that the workshop is free and limited to 35 people. Reserving a spot for the free workshop does not include admission to the concert).
Immediately following the workshop, Sekar Jaya will present a dynamic concert with sixty gamelan musicians on three unique gamelan ensembles: the joyful bamboo rindik ensemble, the virtuosic gender wayang batel, and the shimmering bronze gong kebyar orchestra complete with gongs, flutes, and drums. The musicians will be joined by Sekar Jaya's Balinese dance ensemble performing both traditional and contemporary Balinese dance works. This will be a rare opportunity to enjoy an incredibly diverse range of Balinese music and dance styles in one evening concert.
The show will open with the sweet bamboo melodies of GSJ's rindik ensemble accompanied by the refined movements of traditional Balinese temple dance. The gender wayang quartet will follow, performing music that typically accompanies shadow play theater and various special ceremonies. These smaller ensembles will set the stage for the shimmering bronze gong kebyar orchestra to present thrilling dance pieces and instrumentals, revisiting classic traditions of Balinese gamelan as well as new contemporary works.
