SOA Flute Orchestra Jazzy Flutes
Enjoy beautiful jazz music with a full flute orchestra featuring recording artists Ali Ryerson, Billy Kerr, Fred Selden and David Shostac. Flutes of all sizes are featured with an emphasis on lower flutes, including the rare Double Contra-Bass Flute and the F Contra-Bass Flute. Program selections include jazz arrangements of classic pieces by J.S. Bach and Faure, original jazz compositions, along with popular John Williams movie themes.

Soloists include:
Ali Ryerson, a flautist with a background in both classical and jazz. She has performed and toured worldwide with a wide range of artists including Billy Taylor, Kenny Barron, Stephane Grappelli, Frank Wess, Red Rodney, Laurindo Almeida, Art Farmer, Maxine Sullivan, Roy Haynes, and (as principal flautist with the Monterey Bay Symphony) with Luciano Pavarotti. She has also released numerous albums under her own name, as well as duo recordings with noted guitarist Joe Beck. Ryerson has toured the U.S., Canada, Europe, Japan and Africa, and has performed in many major jazz festivals, including the Monterey Jazz Festival, the JVC Jazz Festival in New York, Guinness Festival in Scotland, Edinburgh Festival in Scotland, and Carnegie Hall.

Fred Selden, is one of LAs top studio woodwind players as well as a Grammy nominated composer, arranger and producer.  His musical talents have been featured in countless television and film projects including: March Of The Penguins (featured flute soloist), The Last Samurai (featured flute soloist), Pirates Of The Caribbean, TED 1 & 2, Family Guy, American Dad, Star Trek  Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager and many more.  He has recorded and performed with Don Ellis, Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, Ringo Star, Bill Holman, Lionel Hampton to name a few.

David Shostac, was appointed principal flute of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra in 1975, and has recently retired this position to enjoy other pursuits. Extraordinary, dazzling, world class and a musician of the highest order are words critics have used to describe his artistry. An alumnus of The Juilliard School and Tanglewood and recipient of two Rockefeller performance grants, he has also served as principal flute of the St. Louis, Milwaukee and New Orleans symphony orchestras. David has performed as a solo and orchestral player at the Hollywood Bowl, the Ojai, Mostly Mozart, Aspen and Oregon Bach festivals; and has appeared with the American Symphony Orchestra, the Boston Symphony and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Recent solo appearances with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra include the premiere of his Carmen Fantasy for flute and orchestra in 2009, and Mozart's G Major Flute Concerto in March 2015 He has worked with prominent conductors such as Eugene Ormandy, Zubin Mehta, Leopold Stokowski, Seiji Ozawa, Karl Richter, Helmuth Rilling and Christopher Hogwood, among others.

Billy Kerr, a versatile musician, is an accomplished jazz artist, composer, arranger and clinician. Brooklyn-born and raised on Long Island, he completed his studies at the Juilliard School of Music and Queens College receiving a BA in music. His major studies were with Augustin Duques (clarinet), Joseph Allard (clarinet and saxophone) and Thomas Nyfenger (flute). His studies in composition and arranging began at Queens College with John Carisi and continued over the years with Don Sebesky, Manny Album, Jim McNeely, Roger Kellaway, and Vince Mendoza. Billy has performed with a variety of artists covering every musical style. Most notably, they include Liza Minnelli, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Johnny Mathis, Natalie Cole, Ray Charles, Peter Allen, Henry Mancini, Julie Andrews, Sammy Davis Jr., and Mel Torme. He has also performed with jazz artists such as Phil Woods, Bob Mintzer, the Toshiko Akiyoshi Big Band and The National Jazz Ensemble. Performances with the St. Lukes Chamber Ensemble and the Brooklyn Philharmonic under distinguished conductors like Gunther Schuller and Lukas Foss show yet another facet of his abilities. Since 2000 Billy has resided in Los Angeles, where he received his Masters degree in Jazz Studies at the University of Southern California. He remains active in L.A., appearing in concerts and recordings with the likes of Bill Holman, Lennie Niehaus, Clare Fischer, and Kurt Elling. Billy plays regularly in bands led by Ron King, Bob Florence, Steve Huffsteter, Kim Richmond, Bruce Eskovitz (BEJO), and singer, Cathy Segal-Garcia. In 2005, Billy was a featured soloist at Festival Jazz en Lima, Peru. While there, he played lead alto with Maria Schneider as well as led his own quartet in a series of concerts. In addition to his busy performing schedule, Billy writes CD reviews for Saxophone Journal and is on the faculty of Citrus College and the College of the Canyons. This SOA concert will be his final Los Angeles area based concert before he returns to reside in Montreal.

Along with these amazing soloists, the group will feature a large group of low flutes, the Roland Tso "posse", which includes the rarely seen and heard double-contra bass flute (one of 4 in the entire world) and F contra-bass flute.

This concert is a one time only event, not to be missed!
