Travel A Path Less Trod
Prize-winning musicians and symphony members team up to deliver a program that displays both their technical mastery and the variety of their favorite styles, wit, and romantic moods from centuries past to the present day. The trio Black Cedar delivers an evening that both fascinates the mind and stirs your passions. Delightful surprises included. From a sonata by Bach, a cassation based on Haydn, to a tango by Carlos Gardel, a romantic reverie by Piazzolla, and a commissioned work by Durwinne Hsieh, the performance encompasses over 400 years of evocative musical genius. Part of a series hosted by the Swedenborgian Church of San Francisco titled "Second Sundays", the monthly series presents nine diverse concerts themed Pilgrims of the Heart, featuring virtuoso performances that musically embody the kinship of peoples from different lands and times. Each performance will cross musical boundaries of culture, geography, and time while expressing the common strivings and joys of the human spirit with rare traditional compositions in authentic and novel arrangements, as well as inspired original modern works.
The one-hour-plus evening concerts are held in the early Arts & Crafts style candle-lit sanctuary, a National Historic Landmark and an ideal, intimate setting for performances by the smaller instrumental and vocal ensembles that are scheduled. Both audiences and artists have remarked on the warm acoustics of the sanctuary with raw madrone columns and hand-hewn rafters. The series gained notoriety in its debut season last year and attendance swelled as the series became discovered.
