Old Swinford Hospital

Share this event:

This five day in-depth retreat with Dharma Teachers Dene Donalds and Vari McLuskie is to support practitioners deepen their understanding and practice of the Plum Village mindfulness tradition and the teachings of Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh.

During our life there may be situations that cause us difficulty such as childhood traumas, relationship conflicts, addiction, separation, work related stress, anxieties about health and money, ill health, family challenges and death of loved ones, to name a few. At the same time there are also many wonderful conditions for us to be happy but it can be difficult to grasp this.

On this five day retreat we will have the time and space to:
* develop our happiness, acceptance and self-compassion;
* look into our difficulties with the support of the sangha;
* and identify ways to gently heal and transform our
  difficulties and suffering.

The retreat will draw on the teachings offered by Thich Nhat Hanh in his books:
* 'Reconciliation: Healing the Inner Child'; and
* 'Transformation and Healing'.

Dene and Vari will share these teachings. Their style is to bring the teachings to life by sharing relevant examples from their own life and practice. There will be the chance to share and learn from others through the dharma sharing groups.

The retreat is suitable for those with an established understanding of mindfulness and a regular practice and will include:
* Set texts to study beforehand (see above);
* Opportunities to practice with guided meditations,silent
  sitting meditation, walking meditation, mindful eating
  and noble silence;
* The opportunity to learn from others through dharma
  sharing/exploration; and
* Dharma talks from UK Dharma Teachers.

This Dealing with Difficulties  Transformation and Healing retreat is the third in a series of in depth retreats being offered throughout 2017 and 2018. Each builds upon the previous one to provide a good overall foundation for understanding Thich Nhat Hanhs deeper teachings. Practitioners are also welcome to join these retreats on a one-off basis where they wish to explore the specifically topic.

This retreat is being organised by the Community of Interbeing. We are a growing network of people in the UK who practise mindfulness and aspire to develop peace and happiness in ourselves and in the world by living according to the teachings on global ethics of Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh. His teachings, which can be followed by people of all ages and any religion or none, are notable for their emphasis on joy, engagement in the world, and integrating the practice of mindfulness into daily life. We are a registered educational charity which offers a programme of courses, retreats and events and encourages and supports local groups that meet to practice mindfulness.

Location
The retreat will be held at Old Swinford Hospital school founded in 1670 which is one of thirty-one state boarding schools in the country. Thich Nhat Hanh led a retreat at Old Swinford Hospital 20 years ago in 1997 and since that date the Community of Interbeing has happily used the school for larger and medium sized retreats. The school has a well maintained campus with  green spaces, trees and plants to enjoy.

Old Swinford Hospital is situated near the middle of Stourbridge and is easily accessible by car or public transport.
