"gymnastic strength with elegant form...distinctly contemporary take on ballets extreme control and discipline" - Seattle Times

Transit of Metis is a multidisciplinary dance work choreographed by Coriolis co-artistic director Natascha Greenwalt which utilizes the Greek myth of Metis as an over-arching metaphor for healing from trauma. Just as Metis was tricked into turning herself into a fly, emotional abuse and gaslighting can redirect our sense of self worth to insect-like standards. And yet, despite being trapped as a fly, Metis used her wits and ingenuity to birth Athena, goddess of wisdom and courage. Greenwalt uses this myth as a parallel to our ability to rediscover our own worth and capacity through times of grief and trauma. In Transit of Metis, nine versatile, classically trained dancers, accompanied by two live musicians (Sarah Davis- voice and Julia Gish-Salerno- violin) travel through grief, nostalgia, and a frenetic need to rebuild and find structure. The journey culminates in a finale that delves into the bittersweet intersection of remembrance and acceptance, and reflects on finding peace and strength in the unknown.

Choreographically, Greenwalt blends new and critically-acclaimed existing works to craft a compelling transit from grief to self-discovery. Greenwalt melds the haunting sounds and images of Unfixed Arias (2014/2015), to the wistful Tethered Apparitions (2009/2010), and the energetic Transit of Metis (2015). The finale incorporates new, athletic choreography which furthers Greenwalts explorations of the range of the contemporary ballet vocabulary.
