The Calvary Chancel Choir and Orchestra spring concert is a celebration and an affirmation of one of America's most culturally significant, and imperiled, regions: Appalachia. Socio-economic and environmental tensions have collided for years in this region, often making its people pawns in a larger power struggle. However, the rich musical legacy of these mountains and valleys, stretching back more than 300 years, is a national treasure and inspiration to composers. Aaron Copland's iconic 1944 ballet score "Appalachian Spring" is one of the most beloved masterpieces in the American orchestral repertoire. Pulitzer-Prize winning composer Jennifer Higdon's "Southern Grace" is a collection of six a cappella gems inspired by traditional Appalachian folk-songs and hymns, including "Black is the Color," "Sourwood Mountain," and "Amazing Grace. Finally, Director of Music Ministries Michael Conley's own composition, "Appalachian Requiem" for chorus, orchestra, and soprano soloist, will receive its world premiere. The Calvary Chancel Choir will be joined by 25 members of the West Village Chorale from New York City, and soprano Laura Green for this exciting celebration of the rich culture of Appalachia through an emotional journey full of sorrow, humor, joy, and ultimately, hope.
