BIOGRAPHIES
Charlene Kluegel, Violin:
Violinist Charlene Kluegel is an active soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician. A young artist with the Ruth and Ernst Burkhalter Stiftung since 2004, she went on to win first prize at the German Youth Music Competition Jugend Musiziert Lower Saxony, first prize with distinction at the Swiss National Youth Music Competition, and the Cornell University Concerto Competition.
Charlene has appeared in concert throughout Germany, Switzerland, Canada, China, and the US. As a soloist, she performed with the Meilemer Symphony Orchester (Switzerland), and the Cornell Symphony Orchestra. As a chamber musician, she has collaborated with artists like the Cuarteto Casals, Frank Huang, Joseph Lin, Frank Morelli, and Michael Kannen. Her performances have taken her to the Kennedy Center, the Zurich Tonhalle, the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, and has appeared for the Journees de la Culture de Quebec, the Kasseler Musiktage and the Cornell Universitys Chamber Music Festival Mayfest.
As part of her musical training, Charlene has had the privilege to perform in masterclasses for the Juilliard String Quartet, the Tokyo String Quartet, the Orion String Quartet, Igor Oistrakh, Pamela Frank, and Leon Fleischer. At the Aspen School and Festival of Music, the Summer Academy of the Mozarteum Salzburg (Austria), the Banff Centre and the Heifetz Summer Institute of Music, she received further instruction from Igor Oistrakh, Pamela Frank, Joel Smirnoff, Daniel Phillips, and Soovin Kim.
Prior to graduating from Cornell University with a BA cum laude, Charlene studied at the Central Conservatory (Beijing, China), the Hochschule der Ku?nste Bremen (Germany) with Prof. Katrin Scholz, and the Hochschule der Ku?nste Bern (Switzerland) with Prof. Monika Urbaniak Lisik. Charlene completed the Masters of Music and a Performance Diploma at the Peabody Institute of Music under Pamela Frank. As a recipient of the Indiana University Artistic Excellence Award, she is currently pursuing a Doctor of Music at Indiana University under Jorja Fleezanis.

Herine Coetzee Koschak, Cello:
Cellist Herine Coetzee, originally from South Africa, holds bachelors and masters degrees from the Indiana University School of Music, where she was a student of Janos Starker and Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi. Ms. Coetzee has appeared as a featured soloist with numerous orchestras, including the Nittany Valley Symphony and the National Repertory Orchestra, as well as in recital as a soloist and chamber musician throughout the East Coast and the Midwest. Her master class performances include those for YoYo Ma, Anner Byslma, Truls Mork and Orlando Cole. In 2002 she was a prizewinner in the Indiana University Cello Concerto Competition, playing Ernest Blochs SchelomoHebraic Rhapsody for Cello and Orchestra. Herine has held titled positions in such groups as the National Repertory Orchestra and the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. As a teacher, she serves on the faculty of the Merit School of Music. She resides in Evanston and enjoys taking on the Viking Breakfast at Sveas in Andersonville.

Katherine Petersen, Piano:
Described as a strong and exciting performer who plays with musical feeling and great technical skill by the New York Classical Review, Katherine Petersen enjoys a versatile career as a chamber musician and soloist. She has collaborated with artists such as Charles Castleman, Matt Haimovitz, Sara Laimon, and Michal Schmidt, and has appeared at venues such as the Hynes Convention Center in Boston, the Empire Saal at Esterhazy Palace in Eisenstadt, Austria, Jordan Hall, and Carnegie Halls Weill Hall. Additionally she was invited to perform the inaugural concert of the Abramson Family Recital Hall at the American University. A founding member of ensemble Duo FAE, Ms. Petersen collaborates frequently with violinist Charlene Kluegel. The duo has recently been featured on the Journe?es de la Culture Series in Quebec, and many other series across Canada and the United States.
An active collaborative pianist, Petersen has held staff positions at Conservatory and Schulich School of Music of McGill University, Killington Music Festival, and the Bowdoin International Music Festival. Recently she was also a competition pianist for the Montreal Symphony Orchestras Standard Life Competition. Additional summer festival performances include those at the Maine Chamber Music Seminar, Castleman Quartet Program, Yellow Barn YAP, Heifetz Institute, and the Aspen Music Festival and School.
Ms. Petersen received her Bachelor of Music degree from the New England Conservatory of Music, where she studied with Vivian Weilerstein. She went on to attend the Schulich School of Music of McGill University for her Masters and DMus under the tutelage of Ste?phane Lemelin and Sara Laimon, where she was a recipient of the Harold Helm and Provost Fellowships, the Schulich and Graduate Excellence Scholarships, the Susan Tajra Scholarship for pianists, harpsichordists and organists, and the Dale Bartlett Prize for Collaborative Pianists.
In her free time, she is an avid cyclist and enjoys watching scifi movies. She also makes a mean cheesecake.

Fifth House Ensemble:
The Chicagobased Fifth House Ensemble is a versatile and dynamic group praised by the New York Times for its conviction, authority, and finesse. Defined by limitless imagination, the ensemble engages curiosity to create unexpected connections with artistic collaborators and audiences of all types, breathing life into repertoire both established and emerging. Over the last decade, the ensemble has engaged theater groups, visual artists, animators, living composers, astronomers, folk musicians and corporate innovators through transformative crossmedia performance experiences for audiences of every type.
As part of its 20162017 season, Fifth House Ensemble (5HE) celebrates the release of Nedudim, its latest release on Cedille Records, with Mediterranean folk band Baladino. It has been praised as an impeccable album with an extraordinary array of songs from Spains Jewish diaspora and the best of contemporary chamber music by World Music Central. The ensemble performs Dan Viscontis Soundings at the inaugural Ear Taxi Festival, and will tour with Mike Mills and Robert McDuffie performing Mills Concerto for Violin, Rock Band and String Orchestra. 5HE visits Mount Royal University (Calgary, AB) with Journey, an interactive arrangement for 5HE of Austin Wintorys Grammynominated score responsive to live game play; and Concordia University (Ann Arbor, MI) with Voices from the Dust
Bowl, a collaboration with the Chicago bluegrass band Henhouse Prowlers and composer Steven Snowden that engages worker stories from the Library of Congresss archives and from worker rights organizations nationwide. 5HE also visits The Driehaus Museum, Carolina Strings Academy, the Eastman School of Music, DePauw Universitys 21CMPosium, and the Cleveland Institute of Music for performances, training workshops, and residency activities this season.
Performances in previous seasons include those at Ravinia, Montalvo Arts Center (CA), the Texas Performing Arts, Civic Music Association (IA), Old Town School of Folk Music, WFMT Impromptu, the Chicago Cultural Center, Rush Hour Concerts at St. James, National Sawdust (NY) and the Miller Theatre (NY).
Through the ensembles heartfelt social and civic practice work, 5HE has cocreated artistic projects with urban neighborhoods, social service organizations, and an agricultural community to spark conversations on issues that matter. Recent projects include Broken Text, a collaboration with Raven Theatre and DJ Searchl1te inspired by multiweek residencies at the Cook County Temporary Youth Detention Center and St. Leonards Ministries; Nedudim, an exploration of music and cultural identity in collaboration with Baladino that engages Chicagobased organizations representing Israel, Iran, Germany and Spain, and Harvest, a yearlong partnership with DePauw University and the Greencastle, IN community culminating in a Mothers Day celebration of the people, places, and stories of Putnam County. This season, 5HE partners with Storycatchers Theatres Changing Voices Ensemble, a supported employment program for recently released courtinvolved teens, to develop a new theatrical work based on the youth actors own experiences and those of participants in 5HEs residency programs for homeless or incarcerated youth and adults.
Bringing its signature connective programming from the stage to the classroom, 5HE develops young audiences through curriculumintegrated interactive concerts and residencies for students grades K12. A member of the Illinois Arts Councils ArtsinEducation Roster, 5HE has presented performances and residencies at Chicago public schools and the Chicago Cultural Center in partnership with the International Music Foundation, the Chicago Teachers Center, Chicagos Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, Chicago Arts Partnerships in Education, and Ravinias Reach*Teach*Play program. Programs are customized to the curriculum of each school, with the goals of promoting active listening skills and connecting music to a wide variety of subjects.
As an extension of this work, 5HE enters its second year of partnership with Loyola Universitys Center for Urban Research and Learning this season, through which the ensemble is in residence at sites serving atrisk youth and adults including Deborahs Place, Teen Living Programs, and Nancy B. Jefferson Alternative School at the Chicago Temporary Youth Detention Center.
Fifth House also frequently performs for college audiences, including workshops, residencies, and performances at Yale College, Eastman School of Music, New England Conservatory, Indiana University, Northwestern University, DePaul University, and the Colburn School. In 2012, 5HE launched fresh inc, a one of a kind chamber music festival that brings together composers and instrumentalists for sidebyside performances, receiving creative presentation and entrepreneurship training.
5HE is currently an Ensemble in Residence at the Music Institute of Chicago.
