Lyrics for Literacy
Greenville Literacy Association is proud to present the first annual Lyrics for Literacy benefit concert! We are thrilled to have Billy Strings, bluegrass guitarist extraordinaire, and his fantastic band, along with local acts My Girl, My Whiskey & Me and Vilai Harrington. Join us May 11th at Revel (formerly the Handlebar) for raffles and a rockin' good time!
About Billy: "Imagine taking a hardcore heavy metal band like Pantera and cramming all that energy into the body of a 21-year-old bluegrass guitarist. That's Billy Strings. It's acoustic music with a punk edge and a lot of youthful enthusiasm and, oh man, that PICKING! Strings covers a wide variety of classic tunes and songs in his show, from a slow-burning cover of Wild Bill Jones to a raw cover of Cocaine Blues or picking delights like Red Haired Boy and Soldiers Joy. But the standout track is the opening song, Dust in a Baggie, a cleverly written mountain song about meth that manages to take a very current and destructive issue and translate it into the bluegrass vernacular. It's a tour-de-force, written by Strings himself, and is the moment you realize just how far this kids gonna go." D.L. "THE BLUEGRASS SITUATION"
About My Girl, My Whiskey & Me: "You rarely hear electronic-rock band Radiohead mentioned in the same sentence as bluegrass icons Flatt and Scruggs, but the duo My Girl, My Whiskey & Me compares its sound to both musical acts." - The Greenville News
About Vilai Harrington: Inspired by acts like Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Buddy Holly, Otis Redding, Pete Seeger, and the Beatles, Vilai Harrington learned to strum on a one-string banjo his grandmother brought home. Raised in South Carolina and now based out of Greenville, SC, Vilai Harrington travels through the U.S. sharing his eclectic story through the eyes of a Clawhammer troubadour. "Soul filled folk music with Appalachian roots. Reminds me of what church hymns would sound like if they were for mother earth." - Adams Mitchell, Creases Zine
