Did You Get That From Your Mother?
Welcome to the wonder rooms, a living cabinet of curiosities
Here, Victorian velvet décor clashes with a desire for plastic, shiny new things. Shiny breasts and button bottoms, plastic faces frozen to perfect pouts. Designer vagina surgeons come into conversation with the most ancient female exhibitionist Sheela-Na Gig whose vulva is carved from stone. This is a live exhibition of the cabinet of curiosities, where one body takes many curious forms. A mini historic romp through the female form grotesquely squeezed into cabinets and jars displayed for all who wish to see.
Did You Get That from Your Mother? is a multi-media work part installation, part performance which offers an unusual and extraordinary showcase of popular objects or phenomena associated with femininity, beauty, domesticity and female sexuality throughout time. From Victorian décor to vintage Hollywood glamour and our present day consumerist desires, Edythe Woolley exhibits herself as a visually stimulating, bizarre and at the same time engaging living exhibition. Using grotesque and surreal imagery, she reveals an inexplicable human form that defies categorization and dichotomous constructions. As the show moves through each showcase, a new sculpture is created in the space, leaving a physical trace of the previous action.
Did You Get That from Your Mother? is supported using public funding by Arts Council England.
