"Life in Shanty Town," is a revival of Township Theater- a form of Black Urban Theater, with origins in South Africa. Under the Artistic Direction of South African Master Dancer and Musician, Thamsanqa Hlatywayo, in collaboration with performer/choreographer Andrea Vonny Lee, this Township Theater production features an original score, live music and traditional South African music and dance performed by a collective of Bay Area artists and musicians.

The cast consists of students from Laney Community College OUSD/Alameda County Schools with music performed by Hlatywayo in collaboration with several Bay Area musicians.

The debut of "Life in Shanty Town" is sponsored by the Department of Dance at Laney College, home to a variety of dance classes, performances and dance programming whereby  students can study modern, jazz, Haitian, West African, jazz tap, dance history, composition & production and more.
