On April 15 Chris Youmans & The Sound Agency will be making their Santa Cruz debut at Kuumbwa Jazz with in a "homecoming" show supported by local soul favorites, The Inciters and Pawn Shop Soul. Boasting beats that would make the late James Brown blush, Chris Youmans & The Sound Agency are funky with a capital F, drawing influence from any and everything that is catchy and dance-inducing. (Under The Gun Review)
The Sound Agency takes the best elements of classic and modern pop, rock, funk, and soul and weaves them around award-winning singer/songwriter/guitarist Chris Youmanss truly infectious songs. At the groups core is a collaboration between Youmans and multi-instrumentalist Colin Deas, who Youmans met while studying music at UC Berkeley in 2013.
The band released their debut EP, Make Things Right, in February 2016 to a sold out crowd at Neck of the Woods in San Francisco. Following the release, the band moved from Berkeley to Los Angeles and has begun touring tirelessly on the west coast. This summer they will be making their debut at several California festivals and working on their next release.
An upbeat and bouncy song about the pains of pining for that one special girl, Taking Over Me is a throwback to the days of boppin 1960s love ballads from groups like the Shangri-Las and the Beach Boys.

The Inciters - 9pm
One of the West Coast's finest Northern Soul bands THE INCITERS! An overpowering 11-piece dance floor soul band that has brought the house down from LA to Chicago and all across Europe, releasing 4 albums to date on Jump Up Records from Chicago, Grover/Elmo Records in Germany and DOING FINE which was recorded in Chicago and released by JUMP UP in 2000. Soul Clap was released on JUMP UP records in 2012.

Northern Soul takes the Motown/Stax ethic but adds a stronger back-beat with more adventurous production, and THE INCITERS continue this tradition in grand style. With 11 members wielding drums, bass, guitars, a full horn section, and three female vocalists, THE INCITERS have no problem filling a room with the powerful sound of soul. The three vocalists lead the band through finely crafted original songs as well as traditional soul music that will get you out of your seat and start to dance. THE INCITERS first formed back in 1995 and had a successful 10-year run before breaking up in 2005 leaving behind a massive following in Europe that demanded their return year after year. In 2009, they got their wish as original member / bandleader Rick Kendrick went to work putting the band back together. THE INCITERS re-formed with some new, younger faces and picked up right where they left off. Right after the group reformed, they embarked on another successful European tour, released a teaser 7 single on Scorcha in Germany, and then got to work to record their comeback album SOUL CLAP!

Founded in 2013 by veteran soul, funk, and jazz musicians, Pawn Shop Soul features a full horn line not often heard in this millennium. The horn front line stands and delivers on the powerful grooves generated by a five-piece rhythm section. An orchestra of soul all by itself, Hammond B3 both sustains the groove and soars above it. Booty bumpin bio-rhythms are supplied by inter-locking traps, bass and congas. Satisfying body and soul, Pawn Shop Soul provides high-energy dance music in the tradition of artists from Stax, Volt, Chess and many others.
