James Hoskins is a multi-instrumentalist living in the foothills of Boulder, Colorado. Primarily known for his use of the cello in a wide variety of genres, he has also performed regularly on gadulka(a Bulgarian folk-fiddle), and other Balkan and Turkish folk instruments, in addition to singing in Greek, Arabic, and Turkish, and has been an ongoing (and founding) member of the Boulder-based Balkan/Middle-Eastern band Sherefe for > 20 years. James has in the last few years been avidly playing the Greek bouzouki due to a deep and growing love of Rebetika music. He has been a modern dance accompanist for ~24 years, and also loves performing in improvisational settings such as Playback Theater, Music Meditations, and for Poetry readings. James has contributed to many studio recordings, usually in the capacity of creating original cello parts, and soloing. One interesting job was creating layered cello parts for the Mötörhead album 1916 in Hollywood, where he and his wife Biz Hertzberg lived from 1987-1991. He also played many tours in Japan for 10 years, a few times per year, with vocalist/guitarist/arranger Akemi Iwase as a duo in which he played cello, Djembe, and sang in Japanese.
In 2000, at the age of 18 Andy Skellenger spent 6 months in India, beginning his immersion in the study of tabla, the predominant percussion instrument of North Indian Classical Music. He has pursued his passion for tabla without pause for 16 years, developing formidable speed and clarity, a deep understanding of Indian Music, and a well rounded solo repertoire under the guidance of various teachers such as Ustad Zakir Hussain, Aloke Dutta, Samir Chatterjee, Ty Burhoe, Abhiman Kaushal, and Muthu Kumar, all masters in their own right. Concurrently he has developed his skills on the cajón, a Peruvian percussion instrument which lends itself to tabla technique, as well as the harp-like instrument from Mali, called Kora, drum set, tabla tarang, and a multitude of other percussion instruments. A clinician at the college level, he works with students of all ages and skill levels. He performs regularly with ensembles spanning myriad styles and genres and gives solo performances. Some of the many musicians he has performed alongside include tabla maestro Samir Chatterjee, Persian Classical maestro Davod Azad, DJ Cheb i Sabbah, flamenco guitarists Miguel Espinoza and Lliam Christy, vocalist Beth Quist, violinist Kailin Yong, Denver jazz legends Ron Miles, Chuck Lamb and Greg Harris, sitar maestro Ustad Roshan Bhartiya, and the ground breaking fusion band, The Matt Skellenger Group. He is also the founder and owner of the cajón company, Nautilus Cajóns (nautiluscajons.com), providing top quality custom cajóns worldwide.
