Students will go home with the recipe, shibori handouts and segments of dyed cloth. Student should bring an apron, gloves (long gauntlet gloves, not disposable), dust mask, scissors, needle, thread, strong cotton yarn or string, several one-quart sized yogurt containers with lid or ziplock bags, and a black Sharpie marker. Please dress for mess. Optional materials: disappearing fabric marker, marbles or pebbles, scraps of 100% natural cloth.

Intro to Spinning on a Drop Spindle with Kelly Shively
Saturday May 20, 2-4pm

In this workshop, we will learn the techniques required to use a drop, support or turkish spindle. Beginning students are welcome, as are students who need to brush up on their spindle spinning.
Students should bring their own spindles if they have them. If you don't have a spindle, don't worry, there will be some available to borrow during class. Roving will be provided by the instructor, unless the student has some they would particularly like to use.
Materials fee of $5 to be paid directly to instructor at time of class.

Double Knit Headband with Kelly Shively
Sunday, May 21, 10am-1pm

Come explore the world of double knitting!  In this workshop, we will learn the techniques needed to knit a totally reversible knitted fabric in the form of headbands.
Students should be able to knit and purl without assistance as well as cast on using the long-tail technique.  Ability to knit in the round would be helpful, but is not a necessity.
Students should bring 50 yards of two contrasting color of worsted weight, smooth yarn and size 6 needles (16 or 24 circulars) Pattern will be provided by instructor.
Pattern fee of $5 to be paid directly to instructor at time of class.

T-Shirt Surgery: Up-cycled Clothing with Jasmine Lace
Sunday, May 21, 1pm-4pm

T-Shirt Surgery is about revamping, reconstructing, and upcycling dated pieces of clothing. It is about being brave enough to make the first cut, make mistakes, and improvise.  Jasmine will provide insider tips and inspiration while you transform a drab garment into something fresh, fitted, and just your style. She will provide many examples of her own surgeries and guide you as you develop the alterations and decorations that are right for you.  Some sewing experience is recommended, but not required.  Necessary supplies and notions will be provided, but you may want to bring your own sewing kit and/or scissors for your own convenience.  For ease of fitting/sizing, it is recommended that you bring along a piece of clothing that already fits well for comparison.
Materials fee of $10 paid directly to instructor at time of class.

Jasmine's Bio:
"  I love to weave, dye, garden, spend time with my family and tend our animals at our East Jordan home. Nestled in the forest between Lake Michigan and Lake Charlevoix is my favorite place to be.
I have been performing T-Shirt Surgeries for about 15 years.  I have been teaching others how to cut up their clothes for 8 years at venues such as Blissfest, The Martha Wagbo Farm and Education Center, and the pop-up gallery Limited Edition: A Space for Young Artists, Writers & Makers."

Kelly's Bio:
A Petoskey native, Kelly Shively was born and raised on a farm east of town. Growing up with a knitting mother, she was introduced to knitting at an early age. It didn't take. But later in life, when she became the mother of three lovely little girls, she picked up the needles again. This time it was a success.
Now a knitter of 34 years, and a spinner of 30, she finds great peace and fulfillment in these crafts. She loves to teach, and feels like teaching helps keep her own excitement and love for
fiber arts fresh.
Kelly has taught many northern Michigan women to knit and spin, and hopes to continue doing so. Her philosophy tends more toward relaxation and enjoyment, rather than a black and white Strict Rules philosophy.
"There are a lot of ways of doing this," she'll often say. Find the way that fits you and brings you joy, and stick with it.
