GAYming the system: tax tools for creative queers (+ allies)
Let's be real: Tax law is written, on the whole, to uphold the white patriarchy, and its benefits are overwhelmingly concentrated away from marginalized communities. Artists and other creative professionals, in particular, are underserved by this system. Until we can radically remake our economy, we've got to help each other navigate it.

Taught through the lens of queer politics, this workshop aims to introduce creative queers (& LGBTQ+ allies) to:
+ Filing taxes as a creative professional
+ Common tax write-offs specific to artists
+ What records to keep, and easy ways to do it
+ Building alternative economies

Bottom-line: You deserve the money, let's figure out how to make sure you get it.

Accessibility: Please note that this building entrance is not wheelchair accessible. Please contact Mike at intern@patrickscabaret.org or (207)749-3001 if this barrier would mean you cannot attend and we will try to work something out.

FAQs:

Q. I'm not sure if I qualify as a "professional" artist.
A. This is one of those key points of inequality--embrace your power and claim your professionalism!

Q. Is it okay if I drop in late or leave early?
A. Absolutely. To get the most benefit from the event, however, it's best to partake in the entire workshop, from start to end.

Q. How much does it cost to attend?
A. There is a $5-10 sliding scale charge at the door, but we do have scholarships available to cover these costs if you can't make it. Just let us know when you register if you'd like us to cover it.

Q. Is there a capacity?
A. We have a cap of 15 people, so make sure you register if you want to attend!

Q. I'm an ally, can I attend?
A. Yeah totally! An alternative economy of solidarity depends on everyone working together.

Q. Who's teaching this?
A. Scott Artley is a queer dude who's nerdy about creative and social entrepreneurship. An artist/cultural producer, nonprofit consultant, and Executive Artistic Director of Patrick's Cabaret, he has taught this course twice at an underground queer art center and once at the cabaret last year. He's definitely NOT a tax professional, but he's game to tell you what he knows, and how it might help you out.
