DISCOVER: KYOGEN
The East-West Center Arts Program presents

DISCOVER: KYOGEN

The first in a new series of public performance-demonstrations, this program will be part explanation and part demonstration of the art of Kyogen, Japan's signature comic theatre form. Featuring acclaimed Kyoto-based actor Doji Shigeyama with University of Hawaii Theatre students.

Populated by wily servants, self-important lords, tricksters, very human deities, and larger than life characters, the Japanese medieval comedy form of Kyogen is just as accessible to today's audience as it was 600 years ago. Like other comedy genres, which bring much needed laughter into our lives, Kyogen has also long been a gently effective way of delivering political and social criticism. Guest Kyogen Master Doji Shigeyama will provide an up close and personal Kyogen primer sharing behind-the-scenes stories about the training of a professional Kyogen performer, as well as the training of UHM students in preparation for the April 2017 Kyogen production, POWER AND FOLLY: Japanese Satire for the 21st Century. Come discover the process of adapting text and performance from Japanese to English, enjoy select scenes from the upcoming plays, and learn to laugh as you never have before.

Sunday, March 26, 4:00-5:00 p.m.
EWC Imin Center - Jefferson Hall

DOJI SHIGEYAMA
Born in Kyoto in 1983, Doji Shigeyama belongs to the Shigeyama family of Kyogen actors, who have been entertaining the people of Kyoto for over 15 generations. He began his training under grandfather, Sennoj Shigeyama, II continuing under his father, Akira Shigeyama, and like most Kyogen actors, debuted at the age of three. Doji's first stage appearance, however, was in The Sorcerers Apprentice an experimental production by NOHO Theatre Company, founded by his father and American director Jonah Salz in 1981. His Kyogen debut followed a few months later, and by 2006, Doji completed all the key plays designated as rites of passage in a Kyogen actor's career.

Doji regularly performs traditional Kyogen throughout Japan and abroad, while simultaneously expanding his artistic interests and activity to non-Kyogen performance, playwriting, directing, and producing as well. Educated bilingually in international schools in Japan, he has appeared regularly on NHK English language programs, performed in and produced bilingual Kyogen in Japan and abroad, and collaborated with young artists of all types. In 2013 he began writing and directing short comic sketches in an annual Hyakumanben series; while spring 2014 marked the first annual Marikoji series, which debuts Doji's new Kyogen plays, that will form the tradition of 100 years hence. Just prior to beginning training of students at UHM Dept. of Theatre and Dance, Doji performed as Shakespeare, confronting the characters in his own play, in Singaporean director Ong Keng Sen's fall 2016 multinational production of Richard III.
