Theatre at Granite Bay Presents: The Unfortunates
Theatre at Granite Bay proudly presents the amateur world premiere of The Unfortunates, created by Jon Beavers, Kristoffer Diaz, Casey Hurt, Ian Merrigan and Ramiz Monsef.

The Unfortunates is a wonderfully unhinged anti-war parable steeped in the lyrics of folk classics, "The St. James Infirmary Blues" and "The Unfortunate Rake." This simultaneously soulful, bleak and comedic musical follows POW "Big Joe" McKinney as he faces a firing squad. Joe falls into a fever-dream and learns through music, community, and love to find the courage he needs to face his final moments. A surreal one-act 90-minute frolic from the cabaret to the gallows and back, The Unfortunates' music is a red-hot score of gospel, hip-hop and blues that ignites this funky fantasy parable.

Originally developed as a Midnight Project at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF), the show made its world debut during OSF's 2013 season, and starred Merrigan, Beavers, and Monsef with Hurt leading the orchestra. Over the next few years, the writers re-worked both the script and the score before bringing Unfortunates to San Francisco's American Conservatory Theatre (A.C.T.) in 2016 and reprising their roles.
Theatre at Granite Bay's production of The Unfortunates marks not only the amateur world premiere of the show, but also only the third time the show has ever been staged, and the first time being produced without its creators.

The show is choreographed by Liz Tenuto, who choreographed for A.C.T.'s Unfortunates production in 2016 and is musically directed by Elly Award-winning musical director David Taylor, who returns for his fifth production with Theatre at Granite Bay. The show is directed by Kyle Holmes, Granite Bay High School's Director of Theatre Arts.

Guests are invited to join us for a pre-show soiree on stage, featuring live music from the Unfortunates Band and concessions.
