Families With Children and the Fair Housing Law Workshop
The federal and state Fair housing Laws, prohibit housing providers from denying housing to families with children when the reason for the denial is because they have children under the age of 18. This group includes single parents, grandparents, foster parents, adoptive parents, pregnant women and anyone who is seeking legal custody of a minor.
The discrimination is often times subtle, using very restrictive rules when it comes to occupancy, the use of public and common use areas, and curfews, where the end result is disproportionate treatment for residents and their children.
At this workshop we will create and review rules. We will learn about what is considered "reasonable occupancy" rules, how to respond to residents that are complaining about the residents under 18 living on properties, and... how the Fair Housing Law views visitors including those who are children.
