Shanghai, 1908. Seven-year old Jialing is abandoned in the courtyard of an ancient estate. As a Eurasian child, she is rejected by Chinese and Europeans alike and finds only two allies: a Fox spirit and Anjuin, daughter of the family that moves into the estate. Jialing grows up during the tumultuous early years of Republican China, always hopeful of finding her mother. But when she is drawn into a murder at the periphery of political intrigue, a relationship that ruins her friendship with Anjuin, and a forbidden affair that brings danger to the man she loves.
Janie Chang draws upon family history for her novels. Her first novel, Three Souls, was a finalist for the 2014 BC Book Prizes fiction award nominated for the 2015 IMPAC Dublin Literary Award. Dragon Springs Road is her second book.
