Mushroom Gardening

This 3 hour course begins with a classroom session followed by outdoor hands-on workshop.
This course teaches the techniques necessary to grow edible mushrooms in your landscape, whether it be a vegetable garden, perennial orchard or forest. We will discuss and demonstrate a number of low-tech growing methods including totem stacks which fruit in just 6-12 months for Lions Mane and 3 months for Oysters, Shitake log cultivation, and wine cap companion planting.  By learning these simple techniques participants will be able to cultivate a wide variety of gourmet and medicinal species.  Each participant may take home one Shitake Log.  Additionally, there may be extra logs/totems or other materials available for purchase at the event.

Educator Bio: Dan Bensonoff is a devoted foodie, farmer, and educator. He began his mycelial adventures as a child when he would go foraging with his grandparents in the woodlands of CT.  Through his interest in ecology and local food production, he became attuned to the virtues of mushroom cultivation. Currently Dan lives in Roslindale and works as education events coordinator and policy director with the Northeast Organic Farming Association (NOFA/Mass).
