Russian Vocal Virtuosi - The Hermitage Ensemble
The Hermitage Ensemble is a choir consisting of Russian vocal virtuosi from St Petersburg. The group have been performing their unique mixture of Orthodox chants and folk music, with some modern hits too, in churches across Europe for twenty years. Their sound has been described as "one moment like a Slavic barber shop quartet and the next like the massed ranks of the Red Army Choir".
On Tuesday 21 April this year they will be singing at the picturesque Norman church of St Nicholas-at-Wade, in Thanet. The church is famed for its excellent acoustics and the wide range of musical events it hosts.
Hermitage will be performing a range of Orthodox hymns, traditional folk songs, and some modern hits. There will be an interval, with refreshments available.
In this year where many will be focusing on the centenary of the Russian Revolution, or the current tensions between Russia and other nations, it will perhaps be a relief to spend an evening lost instead in the ancient musical traditions of this land.
