2017-02-15 PMI Honolulu, Hawaii Chapter Meeting: PMO/Executive Agile Perspective
The PMO has accumulated project and organization experience. One of its most critical responsibilities is to align the selection and execution of projects with the organizations business strategies and goals through Project/Product Portfolio Management, as well as  providing oversight of project execution and the reporting of projects and programs status to senior management and the business.

It also provides coordination, guidance, and training to project teams as needed in the organizations methodologies, standards and approaches for project management, for both adaptive and predictive methods.

Many organizations that have a Project Management Office (PMO) in a traditional predictive environment, have tried to implement an agile adaptive approach without asking, how this will affect the PMO.

The role of a traditional PMO is heavily associated with controlling and enforcing rigid waterfall style policies for selecting and managing the execution of programs and projects. Members of the PMO often view themselves as protectors and supporters of projects and they can be a source of resistance as they try to defend the current process, rather than improve it. So in order to facilitate the positive aspects of incorporating a more adaptive approach to project management across the organization, we need to look at how an organization can transform its PMO organization.

In this presentation, we will look at how a PMO organization can improve their processes by:

Developing an agile training program for business stakeholders and team members.
Training agile coaches within the PMO
Utilize a lean approach to identifying and reducing waste
Establish OPAs for agile projects
Consolidate the continuous improvement findings of individual efforts of agile projects
Assist with compliance needs and issues
Assist in establishing and collecting metrics for reporting purposes
