Flamenco Live with Ricardo López Direct from Madrid
Ricardo López (dance) of Madrid, Spain returns to Portland for an unforgettable night of flamenco. Ricardo will be joined by local Portland artists Laura Onizuka (dance), Nat Hulskamp (guitar) & Lamiae Naki (vocals) of Seffarine, and Mimy Fiaindratovo (percussion).

Ricardo López of Madrid, Spain has been dancing professionally since the age of 17 and performs across the globe in Spain, North America, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America with many of Spains most celebrated artists, including Antonio Canales, María Pagés, Rafaela Carrasco, Rafael Amargo, Rafael Aguilar, Manuel Liñan, Marcos Flores, Angel Rojas, Carlos Rodriguez, Rocio Molina, Olga Pericet, Concha Jareño, and Daniel Doña. He has danced in the finest tablaos in Madrid such as Casa Patas, El Corral de la Pacheca, El Corral de la Moreria, and Café Chinitas. and in prestigious festivals throughout Europe and abroad including the Festival de Jerez, Madrid en Danza, USA Flamenco Festival, and the New World Flamenco Festival.
In 1997 Ricardo joined Rafael Aguilars company performing as a company dancer and as a soloist. In 2002 he began dancing with Rafael Amargo where he shared the stage with artists such as Montse Cortéz and Rafaela Carrasco. He then went on to dance with the Compañia María Pagés in 2003.
In 2002 he began dancing as a soloist for the Nuevo Ballet Español of Madrid. In March 2004 he danced in the prestigious Festival de Jerez in Romeo y Julieta. In 2006 he toured in the USA Flamenco Festival dancing in Flamenco Directo. In addition to choreographing and directing for the company, he assumed the role as first dancer for Angel Rojas and Carlos Rodriguez.
Ricardo choreographed for the Madrid based company Macadanza with Concha Jareño and Gemma Morado for the 2008 production, Jazz Flamenco. In 2009 he shared the stage with Lola Greco, Alejandro Granados and Amador Rojas in Miguel Narros's production of Fedra to the music of Enrique Morente and choreography of Javier Latorre performing in such important theatre festivals such as the International Festivals of Merida, Almagro, and Peralada in Spain and Napoli Danza and the 2009 Biennial of Venice, Italy.
From 2004-2014 Ricardo danced as a soloist with Compañia Rafaela Carrasco performing in such productions as La Música del Cuerpo and Una Mirada al Flamenco sharing the stage with Manuel Liñan, Marco Flores, and Olga Pericet. In August 2006 he danced with Carrasco in the New World Flamenco Festival and again in 2007 in the USA Flamenco Festival. He joined her in in 2007 in Del Amor y Otras Cosas in Madrid, and In 2008 he performed in the Bienal de Sevilla with Carrasco in Vamos al Tiroteo along with Pedro Cordoba, Jose Maldonado, and David Coria. He performed with Carrasco at the 2010 London Flamenco Festival as well as the 2010 Festival de Jerez, and in 2011 he performed at the 2011 Bienal de Buenos Aires. Recently he performed at the IX London Flamenco Festival and the Flamenco Festival de Nimes in France. In 2013 he returned to the USA Flamenco Festival, with Carrasco to perform in New York, Philadelphia, Washington D.C. and Miami after performing with her at the 2013 Festival de Jerez.
Laura Onizuka (flamenco dance)
Laura Onizuka, recipient of a 2011 Regional Arts and Culture Council Professional Development Grant, is the founder and owner of Portland Flamenco Events. She has become a conduit of flamenco in the pacific northwest organizing classes, workshops, and events for the community. Twice a year she takes groups of students to Spain to experience flamenco in its birthplace and to continue her own study of this complex art form. Laura has trained with such esteemed artists as: Mercedes Ruíz, Manuel Liñan, Marco Flores, Olga Pericet, Pastora Galván, La Chiqui de Jerez, La Truco, Miguel Cañas, Matilde Coral, Inmaculada Ortega, Angeles Gabaldón, Alicia Márquez, Ricardo López, Emilio Ochando, Ana María López, Felipe Mato, and María Bermúdez. She travels regularly to Spain to study, to maintain her connection to flamencos roots, and to share her experiences with others. Known for her strong technical skills, attention to detail, and passion as a performer and instructor, she has become a conduit of flamenco in Portland. Laura is fueled by the challenge and beauty of flamenco. She believes anyone who is moved by flamenco has the capability to access it.
Lamiae Naki (vocals)
Lamiae was born in the city of Fes, the historic cultural capital of Morocco. Fes medina or old walled city is the biggest in the Arab world and is a UNESCO world heritage site. It is the only functioning medieval city and also the home of the oldest continuously running university in the world. As a center for learning in the Arab world, one can hear in Fes classical Arabic music as well as every kind of traditional Moroccan music, Sufi music, Andalusian music, pop, jazz and hip hop. She was drawn to music from a young age and began singing, writing songs, and using every resource to find new music and influences from widely varying cultures. Lamiae studied Andalusian music and other forms of classical Arabic music in Fes, and has continued to creatively apply her expertise in Moroccan and Andalusi music to many other traditions. She has performed in concerts with Shabava Persian ensemble, flamenco dancer Laura Onizuka, Algerian musician Moh Alileche, flamenco guitarist Rafael Vargas, and Seattle jazz quartet Mangus Khan and has performed in the United States, Morocco, Canada and Turkey. Lamiae has also been featured on recordings such as Hora de Soñar by Martín Zarzar of the world renowned group Pink Martini and the soundtrack for the film by Alissa Cramer No Plorar Mai (USA/Spain/Angola). In 2012 She was awarded a grant from the Regional Arts and Culture Council to travel to Istanbul, Turkey to study classical Turkish singing with master singer Aylin Sengun Tasci. Lamiae now resides in Portland, USA.
Nat Hulskamp (flamenco guitar and oud)
Nat was born in Portland, OR. He began studying guitar with guitarist/composer Paul Chasman at age seventeen. He was soon introduced to flamenco guitar by Jose Solano. His interest in the influence of Arabic music on flamenco led him to study oud in Morocco. After returning to the US, he moved to Seattle to study ethnomusicology at the University of Washington. There he worked with the groups Carmona Flamenco, The Rez Quartet and others ranging in style from Hungarian Csardas and Gypsy swing to flamenco. In 2000 he co-founded the Vancouver, BC based Arabic/ flamenco group Aire with ney player and singer Emad Armoush. In 2004 he moved to Portland and formed the group Shabava with kamancheh/sehtar/violinist and singer Bobak Salehi. In 2010 he formed the trio Caminhos Cruzados with master jazz guitarist Dan Balmer and Ghanaian percussion virtuoso Israel Annoh. Nat has studied with the top flamenco guitarists of today including, Diego del Morao, Manuel Parrilla, Pepe del Morao, José Antonio Rodriguez and Dani de Morón. In 2012 Nat received a grant from the Regional Arts and Culture Council to travel to Jerez de la Frontera, Spain to continue studying flamenco guitar with the Morao family. He now resides in Portland, composing and performing with Shabava, Caminhos Cruzados and Seffarine.

Manavihare Fiaindratovo (percussion)
A native of Madagascar, Fiaindratovo (Mimy) Manavihare is a hand percussionist, singer, composer and arranger. Mimy started his musical career with several Malagasy music projects, playing both traditional and modern Malagasy music. Mimy graduated from Berklee College of Music in Boston in 2003, and was awarded the Roy Haynes Award from the Zildian Company. He led his band Fikira in 2007 on a tour of Madagascar after receiving an alumni grant from Berklee to help promote the importance of music education for both professional and young musicians in Madagascar. In addition to playing his own compositions, Mimy has also performed with a wide range of musicians in the US, including composer Chie Imaizumi, trumpeter Tiger Okoshi, composer Osvaldo Golijov, and the Boston Landmarks Orchestra.
