A film based on a novel written by Remy Sylado. Directed and Produced by Nia Dinata. (2002, 120 minutes), Indonesian with English subtitles. Nia Dinata superbly brought out the images and nuances of the colonial time of bygone era.
A woman given up for adoption when she was young, returns from Holland to Indonesia in search of her roots. Her mother, a village woman was known as 'Ca Bau Kan" - a word used to describe a courtesan, who entertained Chinese men in colonial Indonesia. Her father, was an immigrant Chinese tobacco merchant in Batavia. Their love story set place in old Batavia between 1930 and 1950. The love of this unlikely pair face a series of difficulties due to the significant contrast in their socio-economic and cultural background.
The film was screened at the 2003 Palm Springs International Film Festival. Awarded Best Art Director & Best New Director at 2003 Asia Pacific Film Festival. This film was nominated for Oscar for Foreign Film category by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. (2002,120 minutes) in Indonesian with English Subtitles.
