After the end of World War II, Grace (Nicole Kidman) awaits the arrival of a husband who does not return. She lives in an old Victorian mansion with her daughter Anne (Alakina Mann) and her son Nicholas (James Bentley), both of whom have a rare sun allergy. When she hires three new servants, they must learn a vital rule: the mansion must always be dark for the sake of the children, and one can never open a door without first closing the one behind. Grace's strict order starts to fall apart due to circumstances beyond her control.
