Circumvent: Dance-in-the-Round
Blythe Barton Dance returns to the White Box Live Arts Theater, shifting space and perspective to bring athletic and alluring choreography a hair's breadth from the audience. Circumvent rekindles the exciting energy of last year's in-the-round dance experience. Blythe Barton Dance combines grand, sweeping choreography that fills the stage, reverberating with dynamic pressure and intimate relationships, making viewers lean forward in their seats. Experience the power of BBD up close and personal in the transformed White Box venue -- a new year in a new configuration, flipping dancers and viewers on edge.
Circumvent creates panoramas of dance that envelop audiences in the physicality of movement. Kris Eitland of SanDiegoStory.com wrote of last year's concert, "Barton assembles some of the best dancers in town and re-configures the White Box ... from a square to elongated galley shape. The transformation allows us to view three mesmerizing dances as landscapes yet sit within inches of the action."
Three new works will be presented, as well as the re-staging of an award-nominated dance. In 2005, "Standing Still" was selected to represent the highly-accredited Florida State University in performance at the American College Dance Festival. Five dancers explore the intricate rhythms of Latin guitar by Gustavo Santaolalla as they create stillness amidst turbulence. The newly-created "How Many Seas" depicts the struggle of one through the tangle of adversity, continually brought captive to her starting place without reaching destination.
8 x Eight showcases Barton's signature intricate choreographic sequencing, as dancers alter patterns and paths to the sound of a cappella voices in a composition by Caroline Shaw. And in a departure from this complexity, "On One's Own" gives each performer the opportunity for a solo voice, as the space around each dancer expands and a single energy fills the stage. A surprise awaits the audience in "Coniferous," a twist on BBD's critically-acclaimed Bare Arm Branches from 2012.
Circumvent is sure to appeal to the broadest dance audiences, presenting highly-technical, athletic dance alongside moments that cut our humanity to the core, one among many and many among one.
