shnit DOCUMENTS
The rst ideas for documentaries often ariseunexpectedly. One not only needs an eager eye but also the gift of discernment. Just like their role models, short documentaries need asmuch precision, empathy and sure instincts. A documentary story thus may begin as follows: After appearing in the lm Rosemary's Baby, by Roman Polanski, Elmer Modlin ran away with his family to a distant land, where they shut themselves inside a dark apartment for thirty years. One morning the director of this lms walks a long a dusty road in downtown Madrid and comes across a skip led with the belongings of the so called Modlins. This becomes his starting point for a short documentary. Other lmmakers accompany their father, in this case an ambassador. And still others self-experiment, like Madeleine who has never killed anything bigger than a spider, so she decides to reconnect the animal and the meal or never eat meat again. That much is certain  all lms share the virtue of "brevity is the soul of wit"
