Mushroom Cultivation for the Intrepid Gardener
Description: New England is blessed with an excellent climate for growing a wide variety of mushrooms, many of which contain rare nutritional and medicinal value. This hands-on workshop will teach you the techniques necessary to grow edible mushrooms in your landscape, whether it be a backyard, woodlot, or basement. Well primarily focus on cultivating lions mane and shiitake mushrooms, both renowned for their flavor, medicinal qualities, and ease of cultivation. The skills youll practice in this class will empower you to be begin your own mycelial adventures.
All participants will walk away with an inoculated shiitake log that will fruit for 4-6 years.
About the Instructor:
Dan Bensonoff is a farmer, father, food policy organizer, and educator. He began his mycelial adventures as a child while foraging with his grandparents. The beauty of mushrooms eventually led him to try his hand at cultivation. Currently, he lives in Roslindale and works as education event coordinator and policy director with NOFA/Mass. He also farms at Newton Community Farm.
