SF Intl. Arts Festival. Dance Elixir & Shlomit Fundaminsky
San Francisco International Arts Festival The fifth annual San Francisco International Arts Festival (SFIAF) kicks off on May 21 and runs through June 8 with more than 40 performances and three major visual arts exhibits being presented by more than 25 San Francisco Arts organizations at multiple venues throughout the City. With its annual theme, "The Truth in Knowing/Now: Threads in Time, Place, Culture," SFIAF 2008 will include numerous World Premieres, US Debuts & International Collaborations featuring leading artists from the Bay Area performing and exhibiting with and alongside their international peers from around the world. This year's festival includes dance, music, opera, theatre and visual arts and events will take place at the Asian Art Museum, Chinese Cultural Center, CounterPULSE, Dance Mission Theater, Herbst Theatre, Union Square, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Yerba Buena Gardens and on numerous billboards in downtown San Francisco.
"CAPITAL LIFE" & "SKID MARKS" A double bill of contemporary dance performance featuring the world premiere of "Capital Life" created Bay Area Arab-American choreographer Leyya Tawil for Dance Elixir and the US debut of Israeli dancer and choreographer Shlomit Fundaminsky with a duet titled "Skid Marks."
"Capital Life" was researched and created by Tawil in San Francisco and Beirut and focuses on the experience the choreographers multi-faceted identity that has shaped her life. The work also addresses more universal questions about being" and stance in a fast-paced, globalizing society. It is the final installment of the "Capital Life Triptych" that Tawil has been working on since 2005.
"Skid Marks" is a story about a couple and the way they choose to live their lives. They live so close to each other; they easily unite into one person, but almost without looking. They are not able to communicate; their world is full of visions, desires, strength, fears and innocence as their only way of existence. Despite all their desires to leave, they box themselves and escape into their imagination. The performance is a metaphor for people from different cultures sharing the same place. They spend their lives fighting about territory, building walls and borders; ignoring the fact they are sharing an unavoidable fate living side by side.
The performances of "Capital Life" and "Skid Marks" at SFIAF are presented by Leyya Tawils Dance Elixir, the Israel Center and SFIAF.
