This year's festival includes dance, music, opera, theatre and visual arts and events will take place at the Asian Art Museum, Chinese Cultural Center, CounterPULSE, Dance Mission Theater, Herbst Theatre, Union Square, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Yerba Buena Gardens and on numerous billboards in downtown San Francisco.

"ANGELS OF SUDERAC" & "THE PHYSICS OF EMPATHY"
"Angels of Suderac" is a work created by Croatian American choreographer Kate Foley working with a group of five contemporary dancers from Zagreb. The piece is inspired by Foley's research into the 17th century witch trial documentation on the "vilenice" (fairy cult healers) of Janjina, autobiographical material and her experience with American popular dance culture. Foley mixes contemporary dance with invented archaic folkdance as a result of her investigations. Zoran Cica, ethnologist, plays the role of a narrator, highlighting new research on the psychedelic shamanism of the vilenice.

"The Physics of Empathy" is a duet by Sonja Pregrad (Zagreb) and Scott Wells (San Francisco) who mix highly physical dancing deconstructive questions and ponderings.  The questions the artists begin with are what is the nature of watching performance? and why do people like what they like?  In reference to the title (Physics of Empathy): is watching dance a physical experience? Does it include something we could call physical empathy?  And, as we intend to display some athletic virtuosity, we consider, what is the attraction of virtuosity?  Theres an old adage; virtue is its own reward. Well, is virtuosity its own reward?

"Angels of Suderac" and "The Physics of Empathy" are presented at SFIAF by John Daley, Scott Wells, Kate Foley, the Croatian American Cultural Center & SFIAF.
