Home Orchard Basics
Michael Phillips Home Orchard Basics Successfully growing fruit for your family starts off sounding "awfully complicated" yet becomes pretty straightforward when you narrow the big picture down to getting the basics right. Harvesting sunlight through smart pruning is what renews fruit buds. Fungal disease becomes manageable with wise variety choices and enhanced soil biology. Even major insect challenges can be resolved safely when you perceive who, what, and when.
About Michael Phillips Lost Nation Orchard is part of a diversified mountain farm in northern New Hampshire. Three acres of young trees supplies a community of shareholders with both dessert and juice fruit. The Phillips family does a brisk trade growing medicinal herbs and making herbal preparations for a New England-wide market. Michael's first book, The Apple Grower: A Guide for the Organic Orchardist, sets the stage for growing healthy fruit. A new work called The Holistic Orchard: Tree Fruits and Berries the Biological Way has been recognized by the American Horticultural Society as its garden book of the year for 2012. Michael teamed up with his wife Nancy as well to write The Herbalist's Way: The Art and Practice of Healing with Plant Medicines.
