AEG Puget Sound Chapter JANUARY 2017 Meeting - Mapping of Potential Landslide Hazards along the River Corridors of King County
Thursday, January 19, 2017
5:30 Social Hour 6:30 Dinner (There are NO more meals available) 7:30 Program
Speaker: John Bethel, WA LEG, and Sevin Bilir, WA LHG & CA CHG.
Abstract: http://www.kingcounty.gov/rivers-landslides
The 2014 SR-530 landslide in Snohomish County, Washington, focused attention on landslide hazards in the Pacific Northwest. King County, located immediately south of Snohomish County, is similar in topography, geology, and climate; and is subject to similar landslide hazards. Climate change is projected to result in increased duration, intensity and frequency of rainfall events in the Pacific Northwest, leading to greater soil saturation and fluvial erosion which would further increase landslide potential. In order to better understand the character and extent of the landslides in the County, an assessment of existing landslide data was initiated in 2014 by King County. Study limits for this project were along the river corridors of Cedar, Green, Sammamish, South Fork Skykomish, Snoqualmie, and White Rivers and Issaquah Creek. Mapping methodologies were based on consultation with technical experts and current literature research. The following landslide types were mapped using landscape-scale methods; deep-seated landslides, debris slides, depositional fans, rock fall, and rock avalanches. Evidence of long runout events were identified at multiple locations. Although, it was determined that there is no feasible method for delineating runout areas on a landscape scale, characteristics that might predispose a large landslide to have a long runout event were identified. A webtool was prepared and is intended to be used as an information source on the mapped locations and types of potential landslide hazards identified by this mapping project.
Bios: John Bethel is almost, but not quite, a Puget Sound native, having moved to the area in the third grade. John completed his Bachelor of Science in Geology and Master of Science in Forest Soils at the University of Washington. After completing his academic work in 1982, John was employed by the U.S. Geological Survey and then moved into private consulting with geotechnical and environmental firms. In 1987, John began working for King County at the Building and Land Development Division (Now the Department of Development and Environmental Services), in 1992 he transferred to the Capital Projects Section of the Surface Water Management Division (now the Water and Land Resources Division (WLRD)). John currently works in the River and Floodplain Management Section in WLRD. He provides geomorphic and geotechnical assistance on capital project design, and conducts landslide and channel migration studies. John is also a Licensed Geologist and Licensed Engineering Geologist in Washington State.
Sevin Bilir has 20+ years of experience in soil, rock and ground water investigation management and reporting mostly in CA and WA. Her experience includes project management, scope of work and budget preparation, subsurface interpretation, conceptual modeling, field work supervision, technical writing and business planning. At King County, she recently worked as project manager and engineering geology support for the King County Landslide Hazard Mapping Study along river corridors and has been supporting the River and Floodplain Management Section on various projects. As a member of the Science and Technical Support Section of King County, she provides technical support for King County landfills and wastewater related projects. Sevin has served for an enjoyed being an active member of AEG Chapters in Texas, California and WA State and with the AWG Chapter in California.
