PROGRAM CANCELLED BY AUTHOR
Deborah Feldman's memoir invites us into the homes and mindsets of the Satmar people, a deeply religious sect of Chasidic Judaism in Brooklyn, N.Y. She provides a window into a world not many of us know about or can fathom. Her story is at once wholesome and warm and arrestingly lonely, shocking, and disturbing. Feldman is reflective, engaging us by saying exactly how she feels. In eloquent and stirring prose she tells a tale of repression and self-discovery. Currently, she is working on a follow-up memoir, which finds her embarking on independence as a single woman and mother, finding a new kind of Jewish life for herself and her son
