THE FREE LANCE
John Philip Sousa was one of the first American composers to write musicals for the Broadway Stage.
THE FREE LANCE opened at the New Amsterdam Theater in 1905 and was a hit... noted for its tunefulness and bright humor. The show is a satire on ineffectual rulers allowing war to result from a series of bad decisions. Similar to Gilbert and Sullivan shows, it ends up happily due to a logical turnaround.
The Comic Opera Guild is reviving the show in semi-staged concert format, with a newly conceived production. The professional quality soloists will be supported by a 22 person chorus. The performance will result in the first complete recording of the show ever made.
Direction is by Thomas Petiet, and will be conducted by David Troiano.
