This event is a full day of design-thinking workshops covering behavioral economics, future strategies and gestural ideation.
Students, professionals and design enthusiasts are all encouraged to attend. No advanced knowledge or preparation is required to attend any of the workshops.
Waste Not! Presented by Nikki Pfarr, Design Researcher & Strategist at Artefact @nikkipfarr
Why do people throw out things that they know are recyclable? Why does a smiley face on an energy bill change usage habits? What effect does labeling a trashcan "landfill" instead of "garbage" have on behavior? What would happen if you made a recycling slot machine?
Learn about how insights from behavioral economics and cognitive psychology can help us nudge people toward more sustainable and environmentally friendly habits. We'll spend some time learning about key findings from behavior change research, and then apply this knowledge to design challenges relevant to the Seattle urban environment. No advanced knowledge required.
Designing for the Future Presented by Ming-Li Chai, Strategic Design Researcher, Microsoft
As leaders, practitioners and designers who operate in rapidly changing environments, how do we make sense of trends, stay ahead of the curve, recognize an opportunity when it happens, and take advantage of it in our pursuit of future solutions?
In this session, we will share a mindset and a toolset to help you factor in the future when you create design strategies today. We will walk you through key steps of the "fuzzy front end" of the innovation process: From developing foresight, to uncovering emerging opportunities, to creating future-forward scenarios. You will learn a synthesized blend of methodologies from leading institutions such as the Institute For the Future, Global Business Network, and Stanford Center for Foresight & Innovation.
Sensory Deprivation for Breakthrough Innovation Presented by Joyce Chou, Design Program Manager at Microsoft
The way we interact with technology is rapidly evolving beyond the touch of a screen or button. Mobile phones enable a whole new world of interaction behavior that leverage gestures and movements, where people can use the motion of either bodies or objects.
This workshop explores design possibilities beyond our assumptions of how technology works. We will look at ways to design new mobile features and products that use more than just touch, sight, and sound. Through a series of hands-on activities we will look at the what's possible when you leverage physical gestures to design experiences not constrained by a screen. _____________________________________________________________________________________
