"Run Free" Nevada Theatre
Christopher McDougall's book, "Born To Run" inspired Sterling Noren to create this documentary about the life of Micah True, and his friendship with the Tarahumara (Running People) of the Copper Canyon in Northern Mexico.
In 1993, at the Leadville Trail 100 mile running race three Tarahumara were brought to compete by the race's promoter. Micah was also entered in the race.
During the first forty miles these short and older Tarahumara men, clad in loin cloths, blousy shirts, and sandals made from tires, were behind the pack. During the next sixty miles they moved up to take the lead and eventually win the race by over an hour. The winner was fifty-five years old.
Micah was so impressed by these folks that he journeyed to the Copper Canyon to learn more about their lives. He was accepted into the Tarahumara's inner circle and was given the name, "El Caballo Blanco" (The White Horse).
To benefit the Tarahumara, Micah created an ultra run to be held in the canyon. Some of the world's best runners came to compete. All monies collected from sponsors and entry fees were used to help the local tribe.
Micah died while running through a beautiful wilderness area where his body was found by fellow runners three days after his disappearance.
