Barbara / Opening Night Berlin & Beyond 2012
TICKETS ARE STILL AVAILABLE AT THE BOX OFFICE. Go directly to the Castro Theatre beginning at 6:00pm.
Germany's official entry to the 2013 Acadey Awards, winner of Berlinale's 2012 Silver Bear for Best Director and the 2012 German Film Awards Best Film (in Silver)!
Barbara was conceived, in part, as a response to Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck's The Lives of Others, and takes place in the same era of the stasi-controlled GDR, but trades the latter's spy narrative for a masterfully-reserved inspection of the relationships between those living under constant suspicion. Having been transferred to a clinic in a small country village after an unnamed offense, Barbara (Hoss) remains at a cold remove from her coworkers, especially lead doctor Andre (Ronald Zehrfeld), who makes bold overtures that suggest he is more than a simple physician. While she still nurses plans for escape on secret rendez-vous with her West German boyfriend and detests the brief, if disturbing, impositions of local Stasi, as the film progresses Barbara finds herself drawn closer to Andre and the concerns of the patients their small hospital and their relationship subtly blossoms, fostered by a shared compassion and mutual distrust.
