Joseph Wytko Saxaphone Recital
Internationally-renowned saxophonist Joseph Wytko presents a recital of compositions and transcriptions for saxophone and piano by Enrique Granados, Franz Schubert, Modest Mussorrgsky, Paule Maurice and Seattle composer and conductor, Karen P. Thomas. Pianist Christina Siemens appears with Mr. Wytko for this performance. A past recipient of the prestigious Solo Recitalist Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, Joseph Wytko has performed solo recitals in Carnegie Recital Hall and San Francisco's Herbst Theater, and has appeared as soloist with such orchestras as the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra, the World Saxophone Congress Orchestra (Minneapolis), and orchestras in Europe and Mexico. He serves as orchestral saxophonist with the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra and has also performed as guest orchestral saxophonist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Grant Park Orchestra of Chicago, and the Chicago Civic Orchestra. The featured work on the program is "When night came," by Seattle composer and conductor, Karen P. Thomas. Originally written for clarinet and piano, "When night came" has been transcribed by Mr. Wytko for saxophone and piano; this new version receives its premiere at this performance. "When night came" was composed in 1994 as a personal response to the horrors of the war in the former Yugoslavia, in particular to the atrocities committed against the women of Bosnia-Herzegovina. The piece is dedicated to those women--to those who were brutally murdered and to the survivors. It is in some part a lament, but it is also a tribute to the strength and resiliency of the women of Bosnia-Herzegovina.
