Adventure! Creatures! Practical Effects!
This event throws a spotlight on the upcoming all-puppet feature film Yamasong: March of the Hollows, the directorial debut of filmmaker Sam Koji Hale. It is executive produced by second-generation puppetry artists Heather Henson (Jim Hensons daughter) and Toby Froud (son of Brian and Wendy Froud designers of Dark Crystal and Labyrinth) and produced by Dark Dunes Productions. Yamasong is the first non-Muppet puppet film in North America since Team America (2004). It is a sci-fi/fantasy adventure in the spirit of Jim Henson's "Dark Crystal" and Hayao Miyazaki's "Princess Mononoke." It features the voice talent of Nathan Fillion, Whoopi Goldberg, George Takei, Peter Weller, Freida Pinto, Abigail Breslin, Malcolm McDowell, Ed Asner and Bruce Davison. This event will also showcase award-winning short films produced for Heather Hensons Handmade Puppet Dreams series. These include regionally-produced films Melvin the Birder by Beady Little Eyes (Portland), Lessons Learned by Toby Froud (Portland), as well as Moonfishing by David Michael Friend (New York) and the original Yamasong short film by Sam Koji Hale. Sam will discuss the art of puppet filmmaking, show behind-the-scenes footage of Yamasong and his latest short Monster of the Sky, as well as present an award-winning documentary Master of the Sky: The Life and Art of Sam Koji Hale by director Sumiko Braun. Question and answer session to follow.
