Community Women's Orchestra Family Concert
Community Womens Orchestra (CWO) presents its 32nd season-opening Family Concert on Sunday, November 6, 4:00 pm Lake Merritt United Methodist Church in Oakland. In the CWO Family Concert tradition, the next generation of women musicians will be featured: the first prize winner of the CWO Competition for Young Women Musicians, Jessica Kuo, will perform the first movement of the Dvorak Cello Concerto.

Jessica Kuo, 16, hails from San Ramon, CA and is a passionate solo and orchestral cellist. She began her musical studies on the piano when she was five, and went on to win many competitions. Jessica began her cello studies when she was nine, and has been studying with Jonathan Koh since 2014. She has won many competitions, including first place at the 2015 VOCE Competition SF Branch. She also was a winner of the American Protege International Music Competition 2016, and will be performing solo at Carnegie Hall this November.

Jessica is currently a member of the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra. She has also been studying chamber music at the California Music Preparatory Academy, performing in multiple quartets and trios. In the summers of 2015 and 2016, Jessica attended Meadowmount School of Music in New York. At Dougherty Valley High School, she is currently principal of the chamber orchestra.

The orchestra will also perform musical scores  famous by movie favorites "An American in Paris," Amadeus, The Pink Panther, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens,  and new film music by a woman composer.

Los Angeles-based film composer Katy Jarzebowski has arranged her score for the 2016 documentary After Spring for CWO to perform at this concert. After Spring addresses the Syrian refugee crisis and premiered at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival.

Familiar film score repertoire featured in the concert incudes Mozart, Symphony No. 25, 1st Movement; Mancini, Arr. Custer: A Tribute to Henry Mancini; Gershwin, Arr. Whitney: An American in Paris Suite; and Williams, Arr. O'Loughlin: Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
