09/30 Sun 7:30 ~ WILLY AMROD Band w/Franky Gadler (formerly of NRBQ); with special guest Mister Roper ~ $15
WILLY AMROD Band:
At age 15, Willy Amrod's band, Brand X, was one of the first signings by Seymour Stein to Sire Records. Other Seymour Stein signings include the B52's, The Talking Heads, The Pretenders and Madonna. Willy played bass for Steve Ferguson (NRBQ's original guitarist) and with Rick Danko, and he opened many shows throughout the Northeast for Levon Helm, The J Giles Band, Roomful of Blues, The Band and NRBQ. His best known album, the timeless Children Of The Earth, features The JB Horns.
In 2010, Willy collaborated with funk legend Fred Wesley on his European CD, Some Help from Friends, which led to Willy's long awaited European debut. Most recently, Willy and Paul Amrod, Fred Wesley and Swamp Bat Sheehan wrote and recorded the latest Amrod Band release, Everywhere Is Outta Town, produced by Gary Burke with more JB Horn performances. Their sound has been compared to everything from Johnny Cash to James Brown; and country blues to funky soul.
More about Willy Amrod (w/audio & video)
Deep in the Catskill Mountains, where the echo of Crazy Chester and Tiny Montgomery still whisper through the pines, Mister Roper awoke by the side of the river. Longing for the sounds of his youth, he wandered from town to town with twelve strings beneath his fingers and stories that flowed like low shelf whiskey. As word spread of his organic tales and rustic melodies, the people began to gather. Together, they found an escape from the processed electric rhythms that plagued the land. The voice of the troubadour blended like buckwheat honey with the patrons, and as they sang, their troubles were drained from the mountains, distilled upon the bed of the Hudson.
Eric Squindo (guitar/vocals) and Rick (guitar/vocals) awoke Mr. Roper in 2008. Together, they keep the troubadour alive with a blend of Americana and folk roots. Both Eric and Rick have been individually writing and performing music for the better part of two decades, give or take a century. Listeners to WKZE know Rick as the host of their morning "Up And Running" show and the station's music director.
