About "Illuminating the Soul" from Artistic Director, Ethan Sperry:
ORS has a long tradition of championing great young choral composers. Therefore, we are excited to introduce you to the music of Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo. Ola's most major work to date is The Dark Night of the Soul. Inspired by the grace and passion of a medieval poem, this extended work offers intense dramatic exchanges between choir, piano and string quartet. Sentiments of stillness and peace are beautifully portrayed, making this a memorable work for both singers and audience! We are very excited to welcome the string quartet from Classical Revolution PDX to join us in this Northwest premiere.
We pair this work with a virtuosic setting of the same poem by Spanish composer Carlos Surinach and the double-choir work Bring Us, O Lord by British composer William Henry Harris, two pieces which will show the ability of ORS to master the most challenging works of the twentieth century.
Ola's first CD of choral music has topped the Amazon Classical charts for the past six months. Ola's initial training was as a jazz pianist, and that harmonic language is evident in all his compositions, and in our concert, our accompanist, Naomi LaViolette, will improvise at the keyboard as we sing Ola's music and the music of jazz legend, Dave Brubeck.
Our exploration concludes with a set of Spirituals and Gospel music which have lifted audiences and their souls to the highest heights of joy for more than 100 years.
