Lou & Peter Berryman and Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, in Concert
Lou and Peter Berryman are musical humorists who have delighted nationwide audiences for more than thirty-five years. Frequent comparisons to Tom Lehrer, Flanders and Swann, and Gilbert and Sullivan notwithstanding, these two are originals, blending Midwestern culture with intelligent observation in a whimsical and wonderfully accessible performance.
During their sojourn together, Lou & Peter have been thrilled to meet many of the singing folkies who inspired their music early on. On September 28, they are hosting a joint concert with their friends and heroes Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen.
Steve Gillette grew up in southern California and began his musical career there in the early 60's during the great folk revival, with the likes of Graham Nash and Ian and Sylvia. His songs have been recorded by artists from Ian & Sylvia to Garth Brooks, from Jiminy Cricket to John Denver. His song Darcy Farrow alone has been recorded by more than one hundred artists since 1966, most recently by Jimmy Dale Gilmore and Nanci Griffith. Quite literally, he wrote the book on songwriting: Songwriting and the Creative Process (Sing Out Press) is a standard text in songwriting classes across the country.
Until her move back to her New England roots, traditional folk singer, Cindy Mangsen, was a mainstay of the Chicago folk scene during the 70's and 80's, and frequented the stages of the nation's folk festivals. She plays guitar and concertina, and is renowned for her compelling alto voice. She also toured as part of the trio VOICES, with Anne Hills and Priscilla Herdman, with whom she recorded 3 albums.
She and Steve joined forces and households in 1989, and since then have been travelling the U.S. with a show which has blended one another's strengths into a wonderfully varied whole. Steve now joins Cindy on traditional jigs and folksongs and Cindy harmonizes on Steve's haunting ballads, as well as showcasing her own songwriting.
Lou & Peter Berryman met Steve and Cindy on the folk circuit during the late 80's and the four have become fast friends, and have found that the best way to stage a visit is to put on a show! They last met up last February in Whittier, CA, Steve's home town, when they began to plan this concert.
Lou & Peter have been singing Steve's song, Darcy Farrow, since they picked up instruments and joined voices in high school 40 years ago. And to their immense pride, Steve and Cindy have added several Berryman songs to their repetoire.
Expect a mini-folk festival, a showcase of traditional American and European folk music, and original songs of depth and humor, performed by four friends.
