** WILL CAMPA Y SU GRAN UNION **
Wilfredo Campa was born and raised in Pinar del Rio, Cuba. As a child, he would organize concerts by enrolling children from the neighborhood and family members. From an early age, his ambition and love for music, dance and song-writing led him to study professional singing at the acclaimed a Escuela Superacion de Arte Raul Sanchez in Cuba.
While studying, he performed with an excellent group of musicians in Pinar del Rio, the band "Cumbre", with whom in 1988 participated in the "Adolfo Guzman" festival, the most important song festival in Cuba.
As a lead singer for "Cumbre" he toured internationally throughout Spain, Finland, Germany, Martinique, the Netherlands and Brazil. During his tenure with them, he recorded two well received albums. Moved by Wil's singing ability and impressive stage presence, Cuban's prestigious group " Maraca" welcomed him in 1998 as their lead singer. For the next seven years, he toured throughout the United States, Canada and Latin America and performed in some of the most important Jazz Festivals around the world in which he had the opportunity to share the stage with the ranks of Winston Marsalis, Poncho Sanchez, the Gran Combo de Puerto Rico, Natalie Cole, Michael Miller, Joe Lovano, Govani Hidalgo, Jimmy Bosh, Jose Alberto el Canario. He also shared scenarios with highly recognized Cuban musicians of the status of Omara Portuondo, Eliades Ochoa and the well known Ibrahim Ferrer whom he shared a stage with, on his last concert at The Jazz Festival in Marciac France.
Wil recorded three albums with "Maraca", "Descarga Total" ("Total Download"), "Tremenda Rumba" ("Tremendous Rumba") - which in 2002 earned them an American Grammy nomination, and "Soy Yo" ("I am"). With Maraca he won several awards and prizes recognized by the National and International press for Cuban Music Video Clips.
In 2005 Wil formed what is today one of the most exciting group of talented musicians and performers to come out of Cuba in the past decades: "Wil Campa y Su Gran Union", internationally acclaimed Cuban 13 piece Orchestra.
In 2006, the group released its first CD " Es Tiempo" with songs that hit the charts in Cuba and went to # 1, such as "Son a Santiago".
In June 2010, they released their second CD, titled "Todo Es Posible", incorporating a great array of traditional Cuban Salsa and Son.
With Wil's leadership and direction, the Orchestra has been touring Europe and Canada since its inception and entered the United States the summer of 2010.
Wil's musical history has two rewarding eras of musical movements: on one hand, his work as a singer for two highly recognized Cuban groups: "Cumbre" and "Maraca", and for the past four years, leading his own orchestra, "Wil Campa y Su Gran Union". His music is influenced by the styles of the 40s and 70s eras, thus creating his own style by mixing the rhythms of both generations, the "Son".
A story that begins in the countryside of Cuba, has taken him all over the world. Wil has the heartfelt acceptance of the Cuban people, for his passion and eagerness to keep the "Son" alive; the music that lives in his soul.
