About Michael Mitchell

Michael G. Mitchell was first exposed to the aesthetics of the human body at the age of 17 in his father's art studio.  Charles R. Mitchell is an accomplished and award winning figurative and portrait sculptuor, using both stone and terra cotta, whose work stands in the sculpture gardens of Akron Art Museum.  The drawing of the body intrigued him enough to attend life-drawing classes while pursuing a degree in Art HIstory from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor campus.  It was in this academic environment, surrounded by medical illustrators, where his love of the figure began to take shape.  After graduation, he studied anatomy, sculpture, watercolor, and oil painting at the Center for Creative Studies (CCS), in downtown Detroit.  Although he was only able to attend for one year, his quest for working in representational figurative art had been thoroughly ignited and the creative journey had begun.

Though not the 'typical path" you might expect from a young evolving artist, Michael made a living as a technical illustrator in the automobile industry while studying life drawing at night from well known local art shcools, Cranbrook School of Art and Birmingham-Bloomfield Art School (BBA) where he received the technical training he needed by well known artist, Russell Keeter.  His career path led him from illustration into engineering, then technical sales and management at a multi-national Japanese corporation where he became President and CEO in 2002.  In October of 2007, he decided to resign and move his family to the Grand Junction area and pursue his first love, the human form.

Within a year, Michael had built up a portfolio and landed a position at Colorado Mesa University (CMU) teaching foundation, advanced, and figure drawing.  It was at CMU where he attended a one-day intense figurative workshop with Daniel Sprick who inspried him to continue working.  Using other great American artists as his models, Michael continues to teach and learn from others.

Among the giants who inspire him are John Singer Sargent, Anders Zorn, Joaquin Sorollay Bastida, and contemporary artists such as Daniel Sprick, Daniel Greene, Burton Silverton, Richard McDonald, Zhaoming Wu and David A. Leffel.  His portfolio of commissions, not galleries, is a focus to build his technical and aesthetic skills while he searches for the universal spirit in human forms.
