LUCO: 2012-2013 Concert Season

Filling You with Wonderment

Dear Friends of LUCO:

One of the most fulfilling aspects of my profession as conductor is programming.   Just imagine the sheer number of choices provided by 500 years of music!  There are many factors which I consider and chief amongst them is providing you, our listeners, with an experience that is profound, emotional and at once re-affirming and innovative.

In choosing repertoire, I also think of our musicians' relentless appetite for both the new and familiar, the dramatic and poetic, the nurturing and defiant.  Our 2012-2013 Season has it all!  Kodály is a composer that I have always admired for his fierce individuality and vitality but never conducted; his Dances of Galánta will infuse you with an irresistible urge to tap your feet and move to the wild rhythms.  We are honored to have been entrusted by renowned composer Thomas Pasatieri to premiere his newly composed Viola Concerto in the hands of musician extraordinaire Jo Nardolillo.  Knowing how we, in the Northwest long for our spring, Debussy's Printemps will be most welcome.  Being French notwithstanding, I feel a very deep affinity for this composer whose work I consider the finest expression of the quintessential French aesthetic.   There are all too few female composers who have been given their due fame, and I am thrilled to present American composer Amy Beach (1867-1944) whose "Gaelic" Symphony is a true masterpiece.  It will be paired with the most famous of all cello concertos by Dvořák with our very own magnificent principal cellist Michael Center as soloist.

As you can see, we are ready to fill you with wonderment in the unique way that only 80 dedicated musicians playing great music can.  Come, listen and be moved!
