5th Annual Early Music Festival (October 28 - 30)
The Portland Conservatory of Music's 5th Annual Early Music Festival will bring together singers and instrumentalists from New England and beyond specializing in the performance of music from the late Renaissance through the Baroque period. The festival will take place over three days, from Friday to Sunday, October 28-30, 2016.
Note: This years festival concerts are being staged at two different locations with various start times. Each concert will be preceded by a short lecture, starting 20 minutes BEFORE the performance times shown below and the lectures will conclude 5 minutes before each concert to allow for final seating.
Tickets prices are: Single Concert: $20 general admission, $15 seniors, $0 students Festival Pass (all three concerts): $40 general admission, $30 seniors, $0 students
NOTE: Even though the start date is listed above as October 28, purchasing a single concert ticket here will get you access to ANY of the three concert days that you choose.
Tickets will also be available at the door.
The performance schedule is as follows:
Friday evening, October 28, 2016 7:30pm (at St. Lukes Cathedral, 143 State Street, Portland) The Berry Collective, led by fortepianist, Sylvia Berry: Mozart piano quartets
Philadelphia native Sylvia Berry has performed extensively at home and abroad, specializing in early keyboard instruments (fortepiano, harpsichord) as well as performance practices of the 18th and early 19th centuries. She is known for her exciting performances and her engaging commentary about the music and the instruments she plays.
Her new ensemble, The Berry Collective, features musicians who perform in orchestras such as The Handel and Haydn Society, Boston Baroque, Tafelmusik, and A Far Cry. Their focus is on music from Schobert to Schubert.
Saturday evening, October 29, 2016 8:00pm (at Woodfords Church, Memorial Hall, 202 Woodford Street, Portland) The El Dorado Ensemble: Music from the English and Spanish RenaissanceElDoradoEnsemble
The El Dorado ensemble is a group of five gambists (viola da gamba) plus a lute player, based in Somerville, Massachusetts. They specialize in music from the 16th to 18th centuries for viol consort.
Sunday afternoon, October 30, 2016 4:30pm (at Woodfords Church, The Sanctuary, 202 Woodford Street, Portland) Bowdoin Chamber Choir, directed by Robert Greenlee, Bowdoin Music Professor: Music in the Time of Henry the VIII Renaissance madrigals
The Bowdoin Chamber Choir is an auditioned college ensemble of thirty voices. The group has performed Ecuadorian music in the Andes, Mendelssohn motets in Germany, premieres of new American music for the Society of Composers, Gaelic folksongs in Ireland, Schuberts Mass in G with the Portland Symphony, a Jimi Hendrix festival, and the moresche of Lassus for the American Choral Directors Association in Boston.
Saint Mary Schola, directed by Bruce Fithian: Claudio Monteverdis Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda
The Maine-based St. Mary Schola is a professional early music ensemble devoted to the performance of master works from the medieval, renaissance and baroque eras. Composed of northern New Englands finest singers and accompanying instrumentalists, this ensemble has gained a reputation for excellence and elegant chamber music.
