Program Ives Variations on America Siblelius Violin Concerto Shostakovich Symphony #5
As November and the holiday season creeps into view, don't forget to add the upcoming PSSO season to your entertainment schedule. Our upcoming concert, entitled "Patriot Games", welcomes Mike Hsu back to center stage, this time as the soloist for Sibelius' Violin Concerto. Mike is a man of many talents: concertmaster of the Chicago Youth Symphony, composer of PSSO's first original work "Synchonicity", and a 3rd year rehabilitation resident. Also on the program is Shostakovich's pivotal Fifth Symphony, a work which marked a key turning point in the fate of this great composer. I can't give away all the secrets, but some concert night surprises are definitely in the works!
The rest of our season is no less exciting. Our Winter concert features an original composition by PSSOs own cellist Derek Ho and concludes with Mussorgsky's majestic Pictures at an Exhibition. Our Spring concert concludes the season with Mahler's triumphant First Symphony and Prokofiev's Lieutenant Kije Suite, depicting the (dubious) lives of some famous heroes. Here are the details for the full season:
"Patriot Games" (Fall, 12/03/05) Ives Variations on America Sibelius Violin Concerto Shostokovich Symphony #5
"Artistic Impressions" (Winter, 3/18/06) Ravel's Mother Goose Suite Premiere Composition by Derek Ho Mussourgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition
"A Hero's Life" (Spring, 5/20/06) Beethoven's Egmont Overture Prokofiev's Lieutenant Kije Suite Mahler's Symphony #1 "Titan"
How much does it cost to listen to this wonderful music? Less than the price of a movie ticket! Adults are $5, with students/seniors paying only $3. At the door, prices go up to $8 and $5, so be sure to order your tickets today. Season tickets guarantee preferred seating and may be purchased for $15/$9 ahead and $24/$15 at the door. To purchase tickets via mailed check or Paypal, simply visit the PSSO website at http://www.psso.org/tickets.aspx. We also now offer an option for direct credit card purchases (http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/2621). Please note that a surcharge of approximately $1 per ticket will be added to use this service.
Finally, please consider including a tax deductible donation with your ticket purchase. Neither PSSO's conductor (that's me) nor its musicians receive any payment for our efforts, so your donation directly pays for increasing costs of sheet music, rehearsal space, and venue rental. Please help us continue providing these wonderful concerts at such reasonable prices.
I look forward to seeing you at this exciting performance! =)
Sincerely, Alan Shen Music Director DIRECTIONS TO TOWN HALL Town Hall is l
